“Chris, are you crazy?” is a question I am frequently asked. Perhaps their speculation stems from my early years in national politics, my time in incarcerated rehab for drug addiction, or losing everything to the point of homelessness. If it’s none of the above, then it must be when I walked away from the lucrative business I had built – using the last $140 to my name – after I realized that making large sums of money in a thriving industry didn’t give me any peace of mind. In my opinion, saying goodbye to my loft office in Chicago’s trendy River North location and moving my team to a storefront in Chicago’s “scary” West Side wasn’t the start of a mental breakdown by any means. It was, however, the the start of what I considered to be a mental breakthrough.
I started the Social Policy Institute based on the notion of having a purpose instead of a job, working as a team rather than managing employees, and ultimately creating a legacy I can actually be proud of. My vision can only come to fruition through you, the people. The eagerness and enthusiasm to help others and make an impact on the world is and will always be the backbone of this company. If that makes me crazy, then I can’t imagine being anything else.
Just watch and see how this crazy guy, his committed team, and his new social welfare organization change the way the world thinks about everything.
